Building Connections 🎄 Holiday Business Hours!

Hi Reader!

Because the holidays are next week, I wanted to remind you that if you haven't already done so, now is the time to adjust your office hours. If nothing else, prioritize adjusting your message in a few key places:

  • Your website (on your Contact Us page)
  • Your Google Business Profile
  • Your scheduling tool (i.e., Calendly or Acuity)

I've included my marketing tip on holiday hours from a previous newsletter issue.

A little preparation goes a long way in keeping communication clear and expectations managed.

🤓 MARKETING TIP | HOLIDAY HOURS

Are you planning to adjust your office hours over the holiday season?

If so, here are some of my tips for making sure your clients and prospects understand that your business is closed (or running with limited availability):

  • Contact Us Page – Post holiday hours here so prospects can see availability and anticipate any delays in response time. You can see my example below.
  • Special Client Email – Email clients specifically outlining holiday hours and any limited availability.
  • Google Business Profile - Update your hours on Google (instructions here) so they appear in search results, helping new prospects quickly see your availability. Make sure you put this as a "To Do" item on your calendar!
  • Social Media Profiles – Share a quick graphic or pinned post on all platforms you use (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter) to inform clients and followers directly.
  • Voicemail Message – Update your voicemail greeting to mention holiday hours, so anyone who calls is aware of availability.
  • Appointment Scheduling Platforms – If you use tools like Calendly or Acuity, block off time or add a note about limited availability to prevent misunderstandings.

These steps ensure clients and prospects are well-informed about any holiday changes across multiple channels!

📷 BEYOND THE GRIND LIFE

Last weekend, Jason and I participated in one of our holiday traditions: honoring veterans at the annual Wreaths Across America event. We've participated in purchasing wreaths for his grandfather and uncles for nearly two decades, and now that we live in Washington State, we can participate by placing those wreaths (and others) at the national cemetery.

This year, we sponsored 22 wreaths: 12 in Washington and 10 in Pennsylvania.

Jason was in the Army for 24 years, and this ceremony reminds us how lucky we are that he came home from every one of his many missions.

I share this not to be solemn but only to share one of our important holiday season traditions.

Wishing you a joyful holiday season!

Until next time,

P.S. If you noticed the change in my newsletter name, that's not an accident. I've renamed Jottings to Building Connections. I have a lot of connection-building plans for 2025 to bring construction industry pros together, which I'll announce in January. Stay tuned!

Hi Reader, This August marks 18 years since I started my business—and I’ve been reflecting on how much the marketing landscape has changed since then (and how much hasn’t). I’ve worked closely with remodelers and custom builders for years, and one thing I hear all the time is: “I know I should be doing more with my marketing… I just don’t have time to figure it all out.” That’s why I’m building something new. It’s called The Construction Collective—a community for remodelers and builders who...

Hi Reader, I see this at least 1x a year, and it drives me bonkers: prioritizing website design over marketing strategy. To put it in residential construction terms, the design supersedes the functionality. ARRRRGGH! Last week, I conducted a website analysis on a design-build remodeling company’s site, and low-and-behold, the site does not have a single service page. Not one. 😲 The site is pretty, but from a holistic perspective, it’s not functional. How can this company be found online...

Hi Reader, It's 2025. What are you excited about? Building Connections! (... not just the name of this newsletter. It's also an aspect of what I'm building). For far too long, too many of us have had our heads down "doing the work" in isolation or in silos within our own company. And this year, I aim to change this! Connection Point #1: Getting Out of My Silo In late December, I joined a (paid) community that brings together entrepreneurs from all across the world and in a variety of...
